Extreme Q Vaporizer Review: 4 Stars
All in all, the Extreme-Q Vaporizer is one of the best units on the market that has both a good whip and balloon style delivery system along with aromatherapy bowls. Overall this is a vaporizer and aromatherapy device for the true enthusiast. It does EVERYTHING, and all of it well. The ceramic heater heats up very quickly, the unit is efficient, and after you get used to the cleaning routine, your unit will give you tons and tons of great vapor bags or whip draws. The drawback to this unit is that there are a lot of parts to keep with you, and the screens require a lot of cleaning and/or replacements. It’s also a little bit more complicated to use than say The Zephyr. True enthusiasts will go bonkers for the Extreme because you can do anything/go anywhere as long as you don’t drop any glass.
The other “con” of this unit is that the bags/balloons do not include a valve, so if you’re sharing you have to use your thumb to keep your vapor from leaking out of the bag. Also, we’ve found that frequently stirring herbs is necessary with the unit whereas it’s not necessary with the Zephyr (less surface area for hot air to pass through compared to the Zephyr. Less of your flowers are in direct contact with the forced air).
Features:
These are made of borosilicate glass (more heat and shatter resistant) and fit snugly onto the glass encased heating element. Cyclone bowls have a black heat resistant layer on top for easy removal when hot. Glass on glass is a very favorable feature of this unit. However, if you’re a klutz then buy some extra cyclone bowls. The unit comes with two and replacements sell for $9.99. If your cyclone bowl fuses to the glass heating element DO NOT TRY TO PRY FREE! Let your unit cool down. If necessary place the entire unit into the freezer for one hour. Gently wiggle the cyclone bowl and this will loosen the bond. When it’s free clean your cyclone bowl.
Tuff bowls can also be purchased but do not come with the unit. Tuff bowls have a rubber layer surrounding the glass. This is a great bowl if you’re going to be somewhere that it might be likely to drop your bowl; it’s not great for every day use because they don’t seat quite as nicely as the cyclone bowls and your material sticks to the coating.
Heating Element:
Extreme Q uses a ceramic heating element; the element is surrounded by glass. A stainless steel tower protects the heating element and stays cool to the touch during usage as long as you have the fan on. It heats from cold to 200 degrees C within about a minute.
Each extreme comes with 2 bags (basically turkey bags) and two glass mouthpieces to attach onto the bags. Bags are attached to the glass mouthpieces with rubber o-rings. We recommend using tightly wrapped rubber bands if you are struggling with the black o-rings. On fan speed 3, bags inflate in 2 minutes with *clean screens. The bags are nice; getting them banded onto the mouthpieces when replacing the bags could be easier.
Each unit comes with a 3 ft. whip. The glass elbow joint of the whip sits on top of the glass cyclone bowl. On the opposite end, the whip is permanently attached to a glass mouthpiece. Two interchangeable glass mouthpieces also come with the unit which is convenient if you don’t prefer to share mouthpieces with company. Whips rotate 180 degrees which is great when passing to friends. Proper whip delivery: Allow your herbs to “preheat” for 10 minutes. Turn on the fan and wait for visible vapor to flow from the whip. Inhale deeply for several seconds until your lungs are full and then hold the vapor in for thick rips. We see better results with the fan on speed 3 during this process, but personal preference does come into play. Stir your herbs every 2 or 3 deliveries for optimal results.
The Extreme Q includes a glass potpourri dish that sits on top of the heating element just like the cyclone bowl. Place a few drops of scented essential oil on the cotton ball and place inside the dish. Set the temperature to 75-100C, turn the fan on, and let the scented oil of choice permeate the room. For best results use in a closed room. This unit rocks for essential oil aromatherapy. The fan is quiet enough that you can run it in your bedroom at night and fill it up with a pleasant scent like lavender or peppermint.
Automatic Shut Off:
The unit allows you to set it to turn off after 1 hour, 2 hours, or 4 hours. Your unit will remember to auto shut off each time you power up. This feature is nice because you don’t have to think about it. Every time the unit starts up, your previous timer setting is remembered.
Cleaning:
Screens and whip attachments require cleaning. For the daily user, screens should always be see through and free of build-up to allow for air to pass through. Compared to other units, this one does require a fair amount of screen cleaning in order to operate efficiently. That’s the biggest negative we see in this device.
We’ve found a reasonable way to clean them is a solution combining a generous mixture of rubbing alcohol and salt. Allow the screens to soak in this solution for a few hours. Then rinse and use a cotton swab to remove the final residue. If your screens are thickly clogged with residue, its best to buy new screens and not waste time trying to clean them. They are only $5 for a set of 4, so you’ll have to decide to either be thrifty and work a little, or spend some cash to make life easy.
Cleaning whip attachments (glass and tubing) involves placing them into boiling water for several minutes. This will loosen residue and also loosen the tubing to allow it to be twisted apart from glass fittings. Don’t bother trying to remove the tubing until it’s been boiled and heated up enough to loosen. (Make sure you let it cool enough that you don’t get burned ). A pipe cleaner or q-tip will remove all the excess residue from the inside of the glass fittings and tubing.
Pros:
The remote control sounds unnecessary at first, but will become your favorite tool and sets this vaporizer apart from all competition. At your fingertips are fan speeds, automatic shut off timer, ground effect lights, and precision 5 degree increment (C or F) digital temperature control. This is really a “do-it-all” unit that has the bag, the whip, and the flexibility to do any type of aromatherapy you want. It is a little bit finicky when it comes to dialing in temperatures and keeping screens clean. Finally, from experience I can tell you that this unit is high quality. We get very few warranty claims and when we do, they’re handled efficiently by the factory.
